Sisterhood in the Saddle: Why Our Women’s Retreat with Trail Riding Starts on the Ground

Welcome to Women of the Rancho, a women’s retreat with trail riding at its heart—and connection as its foundation. From the moment you arrive, everything we do is about building trust: between you and your horse, and among the amazing women sharing this experience.

Over the years, I’ve been to plenty of retreats, workshops, and events, and I noticed something missing: time. Time to settle in, to share our intentions, to connect with each other and the animals we’re here to partner with. That’s why at Alisal Ranch, we begin our journey on the ground—not just physically, but emotionally too.

Selecting Your Horse: Your Number One Trail-Riding Retreat Partner

Weeks before the retreat begins, we’ll schedule a one-on-one conversation about your wellness assessment and background with horses. I’m excited to hear what you’ve loved about horseback riding in the past and what you’re hoping to gain from this experience. If there are specific areas you’d like to work on—whether it’s feeling more comfortable on trails, with posting, or reclaiming the thrill of cantering—let me know! And if you have any special needs when it comes to your horse, like one that’s gentle on the back or super responsive, we’ll take that into account too. No worries if you’re feeling a bit rusty; we can find the perfect horse to help you ease back in!

By the time you arrive at Alisal Ranch, we’ve already put a lot of thought into your experience. You’ll be welcomed by Adrianna and me at check-in, with a special gift bag just for you because who doesn’t love a little surprise?

And thanks to the prep work we’ve done together, our Equine Operations Director, Brandon Gorham, will have already matched you with a partner you can feel confident and excited about. His thoughtful pairings are part of what make this women’s retreat with trail riding such a personalized experience.

For those of you returning, if there’s a horse you absolutely loved riding before, we’ll do our best to make that happen, especially if you sign up early!

Why the Ground Matters on a Trail-Riding Retreat for Women

Once you’re checked in, we’ll gather for our first horse meeting right on the ground. No saddles yet! You’ll get to know your horse through a lovely short meditation, a grooming session, and some casual walking together.

Many guest ranches overlook this crucial step, but we believe in fostering a meaningful connection from the outset. At Alisal Ranch, we take a unique approach by offering a beautiful chance for you to bond. You can talk to your horse if you feel comfortable, or perhaps just set your intentions as you stroll together.

This is your chance to meet your horse as a partner, not just a ride.

Connection, Ceremony, and the Trail Ahead

After your horse introduction and a quick safety orientation, you’ll have time to settle into your luxury cottage before we gather for our opening ceremony in the library. This is your moment to shine! You can tell your story to the group: whatever you want to share about who you are and why you’re joining us. My goal is to nurture a supportive, inclusive sisterhood—just like a herd of mares—along with that wonderful connection with your horse.

After our opening ceremony, cocktails are followed by a relaxed dinner at our two big round tables, perfect for sharing stories or enjoying quiet one-on-one chats with the person next to you. Later that evening, Brandon will be set up to brand your boots, belt, or bag with a custom Alisal mark—a small keepsake of your experience.

Over the next two days, you’ll spend real time in the saddle—both in the arena and, at the heart of our women’s retreat with trail riding, out on the trails exploring the incredible landscape around Alisal Ranch. This year, our social media wranglers will be capturing some lovely moments during the rides, which we’ll share with everyone after the retreat. Fingers crossed for some fun video clips from our arena events too!

On our final night together, we close with a sisterhood ceremony: an open, reflective space to share what you’ve experienced and how you’ve grown, all over dessert.

We can’t wait to welcome you. Grounded. Connected. Ready for the trail!
